Let’s Help Rūdolfs!

An event that changed everything

On October 15, 2023, while returning from a visit to their grandmother, the Magurs family — Rūdolfs, his three-year-old brother Mikelis, six-year-old sister Anna, and their parents — stopped on the roadside of the Riga–Ventspils highway to collect colorful autumn leaves for a school project.

Curious and full of life, Rūdolfs jumped out of the car first… and within seconds, tragedy struck. A passing car hit him.

Despite sustaining very severe head injuries, Rūdolfs survived. He spent a long time in intensive care and underwent several complex head and brain surgeries. When discharged from the hospital, he was still in a serious condition — he required constant care, had lost the ability to move and speak, but retained consciousness and the will to live.

The family adapted their home to care for their son and, since day one, has been fighting for his recovery.

“We are doing and will do everything possible for Rūdolfs. He is our heart and our strength,” says his mother.

Small steps toward a big miracle

Since coming home after five months in the Children’s Clinical University Hospital, Rūdolfs’ daily life has been made as normal as possible. Being at home, socializing in his role as a student together with his teammates and classmates at Baloži Secondary School, and following basketball and football both in Latvia and worldwide — all this motivates Rūdolfs to work hard.

There are still ups and downs related to his fragile general health condition after the severe head injury, but Rūdolfs continues to engage in the rehabilitation process as much as he can. He has worked hard at Vaivari Rehabilitation Center, the Children’s Clinical University Hospital Rehabilitation Department, the Haapsalu Neurorehabilitation Clinic, and the NAPA Center in London.

Currently, he is developing and regaining the skills he recovered during the summer rehabilitation course at NAPA London — such as stabilizing and holding his head, swallowing, using his hands to press an alternative communication button to answer questions, becoming more aware of his body, and regaining movement.

Rūdolfs is now on the waiting list for the next rehabilitation course at NAPA Center in London, and the Poga Rehabilitation Center also recognizes the need to continue regular, intensive rehabilitation courses. These are essential to help Rūdolfs regain self-determination and achieve independence in any area of life.

To continue this important journey, significant financial resources are needed, as rehabilitation will be required for a long time to come.
